Offering a long-term monitoring plan to remediate slope stability and rockfall
Decades ago in the City of Hamilton, several roadways were built across an escarpment—various rock cuts were excavated along the road alignments to facilitate road construction in a mountainous region. Many of these cuts were located in close proximity to the roadways and now rockfalls from exposed slopes pose a hazard for vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
The City engaged us to provide engineering services for slope stability analysis, evaluation of long-term slope remediation options, and preparation of tender documents. Our team’s inspection encompassed 20 rock slope locations that were included in a 2015 initial assessment. In addition, we applied the Ontario Rockfall Hazard Rating System (RHRON) to assess the rockfall hazards for each slope and provide a rating based on four parameters, including magnitude, frequency, reach, and consequence of rockfalls. Keeping the previous remedial work under consideration, we inspected and re-assessed the conditions of the rock slopes.
We updated the rockfall hazard rating for the slopes and provided recommendations for the prioritization of the next round of remedial and maintenance work.
